Manufacturing and Industrial

Machine Manufacturing

Build-to-order machines assembled from bought-out and machined parts over weeks, with every serial carrying its own configuration.

Also covers: Machinery Manufacturing · Special Purpose Machines · SPM Manufacturing · Machine Builders

About this industry

A machine builder assembles hundreds of parts — some machined in-house, some bought out, some sent for job work — into a unit that may take weeks to build and months to commission. Each order varies in options and electrics. Knowing which parts are short, what the unit has cost so far and what exactly was shipped under a serial number is what separates a profitable build from a late one.

Common operational problems

  • Assembly stops because one bought-out part was never ordered
  • Machined parts and bought-out parts are planned on different lists
  • Cost to date on a unit under build is unknown until it ships
  • Option and configuration changes are agreed by phone and not reflected in the build
  • Spares requests arrive without a record of what was fitted to that serial

Example workflows

  1. Order configured from a base model with its options

  2. Multi-level BOM exploded into make, buy and job-work requirements

  3. Shortages listed against the assembly schedule before it starts

  4. Material and hours booked to the unit's serial as it is built

  5. As-built configuration retained for spares and service

On Request

Where a ready product does not reach far enough, these are the needs this industry raises most often. We do not build to order; telling us which of these you need is what shapes what we build next.

  • Configured BOM per order
  • Serial-wise as-built record
  • Commissioning and service history per unit
