Manufacturing and Industrial

Commercial Printing

Print production at press scale — plates, paper and press hours per job — where paper wastage and press utilisation are the margin.

Also covers: Commercial Printers · Offset Printing Plant · Label Printing · Print Production

About this industry

A commercial printer runs jobs through prepress, plate-making, press and post-press — cutting, folding, binding, lamination. Paper is the largest cost and is always over-issued to cover make-ready; press hours are the constraint. The estimate assumed a wastage allowance and a press speed. The printer needs to see, per job, what was actually spent.

Common operational problems

  • Paper issued for make-ready is not reconciled against the allowance
  • Press hours per job are not recorded
  • Plates are remade without being charged to the cause
  • Post-press work sent outside is tracked on paper
  • Estimates do not learn from what previous jobs actually used

Example workflows

  1. Job estimated with paper, plates, press and post-press

  2. Paper issued with make-ready allowance and returns recorded

  3. Press time recorded per job and per machine

  4. Post-press job work issued and received

  5. Actual cost compared with the estimate at closure
