Worked scenario

The prescription that walks out unfilled

Out-of-stock in pharmacy rarely means the molecule is unavailable. It means nobody at the counter could find the alternative fast enough to keep the customer.

3 min read

A customer presents a prescription for a brand the shop does not hold. The molecule is on the shelf under another name. Whether that sale happens depends on the memory of whoever is serving.

The silent part

When the customer leaves, nothing is recorded. The pharmacy has no idea how often it happens, for which items, or whether the same product is being asked for weekly. The stocking decision is therefore made without the only data that would inform it.

Composition lookup is the whole feature

Not a clinical recommendation — the substitution decision belongs to the pharmacist and, where required, the prescriber. What software contributes is speed: showing what is held with the same composition, with its stock position, before the customer has put the prescription back in their pocket.

Recording the miss

A two-tap record of an item asked for and not held turns an invisible loss into a purchasing input. Most pharmacies discover that a small number of items account for most of the walkouts, and that several of them were never stocked because nobody realised they were being asked for.

What changes

  • Alternatives by composition retrievable at the counter in one lookup
  • Stock position visible for the alternative before it is offered
  • Repeat prescriptions recognised so regulars are not treated as new
  • Demand for unstocked items recorded rather than lost silently
