Worked scenario

Failed under warranty, or failed because of how it was run

Warranty disputes turn on operating conditions nobody recorded, and the manufacturer usually concedes because it cannot demonstrate otherwise.

3 min read

A machine specified for one duty is used for another. It fails. The customer claims warranty and the manufacturer suspects misapplication, with no evidence either way.

What was agreed at commissioning

Intended duty, materials and shift pattern are usually discussed and rarely written into the commissioning record. Recorded, they define the envelope; unrecorded, warranty covers whatever the customer says happened.

Training as a record

Operator training is almost always given and almost never acknowledged in writing. An acknowledgement costs a signature and removes the argument that nobody was shown how to run it.

The aggregate is the real prize

Failures analysed by cause across the installed base tell a manufacturer whether a component is genuinely weak or whether one customer runs machines hard. Handled case by case, that distinction never emerges and design decisions are made on anecdote.

What changes

  • Commissioning conditions recorded, including intended duty
  • Operator training delivered and acknowledged in writing
  • Service visits documented with observed usage
  • Failures analysed by cause across the installed base
