Worked scenario
The same bangle, two prices, one week apart
Where the metal rate is fixed by the market, making charges are the entire commercial decision, and most shops do not measure them.

Metal price is public and not a lever. Making charges are where a jeweller's margin actually sits, and they are agreed conversationally at the counter.
Folded into a total, they disappear
An invoice showing one figure cannot be analysed. Recorded as a rate against the item, making charges become measurable — and the gap between the list rate and what is realised is usually wider than the owner believes.
The pattern is by category
Discounting concentrates in categories where customers compare most easily. Knowing which those are is what allows the list rate to be set sensibly rather than aspirationally.
What changes
- Making charge recorded as a rate, not folded into a total
- Discretion visible per item category and per salesperson
- Realised making charge compared with the list rate
- Categories where discounting is habitual identified
