Fragile material breaks. Everyone accepts a percentage. The percentage is treated as a property of the material rather than of the process.
Three stages, three fixes
Damage on arrival is a supplier or transporter claim. Damage during unloading is a method and equipment question. Damage in the yard is a stacking question. Recorded together they are indistinguishable and get one useless response.
Claims need to be made at receipt
Goods that arrived damaged are claimable within a window that is usually short. Found later in the stack, the claim is gone and the cost is the supplier's.
What the split usually shows
One stage dominating, and it is often not the one assumed. Yards that were about to buy better packaging discover the losses were happening at unloading, which is a cheaper problem to solve.
